CHUCK WEBSTER: A Good Group

17 March - 14 April 2024

Marvin Gardens is pleased to present A Good Group, a solo exhibition of drawings on vintage hand made paper by Chuck Webster, curated by Jens-Peter Brask. On display are ten unique framed works made between 2022 and 2023. Webster fuses bits of filmic dialogue, song lyrics, language-like symbols, and riffs on them in a pared down free-association akin to concrete poetry. Expressive, yet at times touching a pared back minimal aesthetic, all are melded into Webster’s unique visual language. Brask, having a long relationship with the artist and his work, has honed in on this new vein of drawings where text has become a featured motif. Webster’s energetic hand graphs out and plots totemic structures in color pencil, pastel, and ink. Using them all with great effect by varying pressure and subtly changing hues at times between adjacent words. Often the compositions are centrally weighted and arrangement is done side-to-side, and above-or-below. This enhances the graphic nature of these talismans, suspended in their own poetic identity, allowing us to become slowly acquainted yet not fully known.
