ADA GOLDFELD: On the Rocks

8 September - 6 October 2024
Marvin Gardens is pleased to present On The Rocks, a solo exhibition of paintings by Ada Goldfeld. Four discrete works, each easily holding their own wall, comprise this show. Within each work is embedded a moment of tension, or an idea of uncertainty. Snow Day pictures a glass liquid measuring cup in a microwave, with a metallic utensil submersed in its contents. It’s not clear whether the microwave door is open or shut, so the viewer is unsure of how close they are to a volatile situation, though they are suspended inside it nonetheless. After Roe Fell depicts blue roses laid on a red checked tablecloth, compositionally arranged to reference an abstraction of the American flag. As in all Goldfeld’s paintings, we are presented with a moment of tension, which could go either way. As the show title On The Rocks suggests, we could be in for a tough situation, or about to enjoy a cold drink. Which one it will be, however, appears to be out of our control.
