Sean Gannon: New Work New Work

5 February - 5 March 2023
Marvin Gardens is pleased to announce the opening of “NEW WORK NEW WORK,” a solo exhibition of recent paintings and assemblages by Sean Gannon. This show generously expands the artist’s focus on combining painting with fine woodworking, accompanying an often tongue-in-cheek humor. This exhibition marks both the artist’s first solo show in New York, and his first with the gallery. Gannon’s flatly painted minimal canvases suggest vintage cartoons with a Chicago Imagist flavor. Carefully considered muted color tones and matte finish work to slow the viewer down and evoke stillness, while also providing the appropriate space for the woodworking elements be fully integrated into the artwork, not as mere punctuation. The unique combination of painting and finished American walnut calls to mind a connecting thread to the work of Richard Artschwager, although Gannon is decisively more rooted in the tradition of painting as an object. Here, the novelty of the visual joke is balanced with just enough austerity to settle the viewer into a focused stillness.
