WALLACE DIBBLE + TOM HENRY
Blue Sunset 10 Jun - 10 Jul 2022 “Blue Sunset”, is a phrase taken from AI generated lyrics that Henry created by extracting words from Dibble’s dew drop poems and using terms that described both his and Dibble’s works.
“This rainbow after blue, Give me colors that do not need wings Fly tonight, after the blue sunset I dare you bring me flowers” As time is spent with their work, a rich dialogue unfolds, revealing a myriad of compelling similarities. These include the speed at which one understands the paintings, the technicality, and their sensitivity to time. Each piece in the show captures an intimate and ephemeral moment of time. Tom’s painting’s tonality and depiction of light, shadow, and reflection immediately transports the viewer to a specific time-of-the-day, if not a specific day. The water droplets' rendered as text from Wallace’s personal written poetry could evaporate, drip or morph with a second, while her words and the visual impression of the muted background communicate a specific time-in-life and a specific time-of-the-year.
Both artists’ paintings exude an observationally-derived technical quality. Tom’s watercolor scenes are direct and textural, and his sensitive and purposeful frames secure the images. Wallace utilizes trompe-l'oeil on acrylic wash dyed canvases to give life and ephemerality to her painted words.

ISABELLA CUGLIEVAN
THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING SMALL 27 Aug - 26 Sep 2021 Marvin Gardens is pleased to announce the opening of “The Advantages Of Being Small.” This exhibition marks Isabella Cuglievan’s first solo show. We are excited to present both paintings on canvas and on paper.
In these works, highly pigmented watercolor and ink immediately offer an intensely vivid kaleidoscopic effect, ripe with floral and textile references. While the patterning may reference textile and quilting from across the globe, the color palette shows influence distinctly Peruvian – Cuglievan was born and raised in Lima.
These paintings are made by layering carefully chosen blends of color upon carefully chosen blends of color, within a predetermined framework often radiating around and from the center. At times we see thick ribbons of color which look as if sliced-through, revealing additional bands of color inside, a reading that suggests the psychedelic, while also akin to digital glitch patterns. As symmetry is tested and pulled into asymmetry, the works remain grounded in repetitive compositions and controlled brushwork. The surfaces return the viewer again and again to the thin and delicate nature of the application.
The paintings are as delicate as they are strong, a challenging combination to achieve. We look forward with great excitement to seeing Cuglievan take her place in a new generation of painters, leading us in expanding our language of abstraction. Read more -
